Report: Eagles to privately work out Carson Wentz

The Eagles worked out one of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft class, Jared Goff, on Monday (see story).

They'll get a chance to see the other top passer on Wednesday.

According to ESPN's Adam Caplan, the team will privately work out North Dakota State's Carson Wentz.

Even with the team working out Goff on Monday, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the Eagles will work out Wentz. The team has repeatedly said it will take a quarterback in this year's draft, and Goff and Wentz are widely considered to be the top two in the class.

Would the Eagles take a quarterback with the eighth pick?

“Oh, I don’t know about that," head coach Doug Pederson said last week at the NFL owners' meetings. "But I know if you’re looking for that third quarterback, then there’s some good ones in this draft. Taking out the top three, there’s still some guys in there that you can develop that would be good fits as a number three.”

Pederson said he prefers private workouts to pro days. In a private workout, the coaches can generally get a better sense of the player because they can speak with him about what that team does and make him throw passes they want to see.

While there's a chance Goff or Wentz could still be available at No. 8, the Eagles might need to trade up if they really want one of them. One thing's for sure: Neither will be available when the Eagles take their next pick in the third round.

But there are still plenty of other options in the mid and late rounds. One of them might be Stanford's Kevin Hogan, whom the team worked out on Tuesday.

Pederson wouldn't tip his hand last week by naming players, but said there are quarterbacks he likes that will be available after the top three -- Goff, Wentz and Paxton Lynch -- are off the board.
