The Eagles have confirmed they interviewed former Giants coach Tom Coughlin for their open head coaching position.
Coughlin, who coached the Giants for 12 seasons and won two Super Bowls, met with the Eagles on Monday after being granted permission by the Giants. He needed permission because he resigned and the Giants still hold his rights.
He is the sixth head coaching candidate the Eagles have interviewed following Duce Staley, Pat Shurmur, Adam Gase, Ben McAdoo and Doug Pederson. Gase became the Dolphins' head coach on Saturday, so he's officially out of the running.
McAdoo had been working as the offensive coordinator under Coughlin for the last three years. The Giants already interviewed McAdoo for their opening.
Coughlin, 69, resigned last Monday and at his press conference the next day left open the possibility of coaching again.
Before his 12 years coaching the Giants, Coughlin was the Jaguars' head coach from 1995 to 2002. For his career, Coughlin has a 170-150 record, including a 102-90 mark with the Giants.
Coughlin's first job in the NFL was actually with the Eagles. He was the team's wide receivers coach in 1984-85 under Marion Campbell. That might check off a box in the mind of owner Jeff Lurie, who said he wanted his next coach to understand Philadelphia.
