PITTSBURGH -- The Montreal Canadiens remain perfect. The Pittsburgh Penguins remain an imperfect work in progress.
Tomas Fleischmann finished off an odd-man rush with his first goal of the season early in the third period to lift the unbeaten Canadiens to a 3-2 win over the winless Penguins on Tuesday night.
Fleischmann scored off a feed from David Desharnais and Carey Price made it stand up as Montreal improved to 4-0. Max Pacioretty scored twice for the Canadiens. Price finished with 31 saves as Montreal wrapped up a perfect four-game road swing to start the season (see full recap).
Predators beat Devils to move to 3-0-0
NEWARK, N.J. -- Pekka Rinne and the Nashville Predators ran their season-opening winning streak to three for one outstanding reason. They surrender very few goals
Rinne made 22 saves in a 3-1 victory over the struggling New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. He has allowed only two goals so far, and gave much of the credit to his defensemen.
"We are so fortunate to have so many good defensemen," Rinne said. "They also create a lot of offense as well, but they block shots, they control the game, they have good sticks. They know how to come back and help out. We are comfortable together and have a lot of confidence together. Overall, it's great to have that much talent," (see full recap).
Jones has 2nd straight SHO, Sharks top Caps
WASHINGTON -- Martin Jones is fitting in perfectly in goal for the San Jose Sharks.
NHL
Jones made 31 saves for his second straight shutout and the Sharks took advantage of Alex Ovechkin's absence from Washington's lineup to beat the Capitals 5-0 on Tuesday night.
The Sharks improved to 3-0-0 and have outscored their opponents 12-1. Jones allowed a goal on the first shot he faced this season, but has blanked opponents for the following 178 minutes, 11 seconds (see full recap).
Hutchinson saves 40 as Jets beat Rangers
NEW YORK -- The Winnipeg Jets came into Madison Square Garden in ill-humor. It was the New York Rangers who left their home arena in a foul mood.
"This is a league where you don't want to lose two games in a row whether it's home or on the road," said Michael Hutchinson after he made 40 saves and Brian Little scored twice to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.
"We came out with a better mindset than against the Islanders (in Monday afternoon's 4-2 loss) and were a little more prepared," (see full recap).
