A day before the July 1 free agency period opens, Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher created a tad more wiggle room.
The Flyers placed depth defenseman David Schlemko on unconditional waivers Sunday for the purpose of terminating his contract. Schlemko is expected to go unclaimed and the Flyers will buy out his contract.
Schlemko, who was acquired in the February trade that sent Dale Weise and Christian Folin to the Canadiens, was under contract through the 2019-20 season with a cap hit of $2.1 million. Per spotrac.com, Schlemko's buyout cap hit will be $900,000 in 2019-20 and $600,000 in 2020-21.
The 32-year-old Schlemko was not expected to make the Flyers' roster and would have played for AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley, which would have lowered his cap hit. The buyout lowers it a little more.
The Flyers have around $15.7 million in cap space, according to CapFriendly.com. Fletcher still needs to sign four restricted free agents in Travis Konecny, Ivan Provorov, Scott Laughton and Nicolas Aube-Kubel (see Flyers' free agency outlook).
"We feel we've made some key additions, we've filled some holes and we have some pretty good young kids coming, too," the GM said this week. "I think our depth will be significantly better and hopefully on July 1 and 2, we'll have some more announcements to make on some players that can come in and help our organization, whether it's in Lehigh Valley or Philadelphia. I think we'll be in a good space in having good players and having sufficient depth."
