The Flyers begin a nine-day, five-game road trip Friday night in Buffalo.
Gotta hope it goes better than Thursday night’s horrific 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center.
New Jersey scored twice in the opening 2:32 of the second period to break a 1-1 tie and wrap it up.
Travis Zajac tallied two power-play goals, both off Kyle Palmieri assists.
That’s five power-play goals the Flyers' penalty-kill units have yielded in four games.
Poor start
This marked the second game in succession the Flyers had a sluggish start. In fact, they didn’t get a shot on goalie Cory Schneider until 5:47 into play (Ryan White). It was a brutal period as the Flyers were outshot, 14-7. Nothing happened.
Notable goals
Defenseman Luke Schenn broke the scoreless tie at 15:04 of the second period. Schenn scooped the puck off the right boards and threw it at the net. The puck either caught Schneider’s pad or Stephen Gionta’s stick. It hit something and went it. Schenn has three points in two games (goal, two assists).
Goalie report
Steve Mason was under siege most of the night as New Jersey had the far better scoring chances. Shot after shot came unimpeded. Some from point blank range, such as Jacob Josefson’s gimme in the slot.
Power play
The Devils had as many shots as the Flyers on their first chance -– one. Still no point shots from Mark Streit or Evgeny Medvedev on their units during the game.
Penalty kill
The Flyers gave up their fourth power-play goal in as many games to Zajac near the end of the second period to make it a 1-1 game. The Flyers' PK units were terrible as the Devils scored twice on the power play.
Vinny watch
Vinny Lecavalier, making his first appearance of the season, played 2:36 in the first period and did not have a shot. Through two periods, he had 5:31 and was plus-1. Lecavalier had 7:16 ice time overall with one shot and an assist. All his minutes were even-strength.
Scratches
Forwards Sean Couturier (concussion) and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (right knee/ankle); defenseman Radko Gudas (healthy).
Up next
It’s back-to-back games again for the Flyers as they left for Buffalo late Thursday to meet the Sabres on Friday night.
