Instant Replay: Stars 2, Flyers 1

BOX SCORE

The final 15 countdown to season’s end began in earnest on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center as the Flyers hosted the Dallas Stars, a team very much like themselves — they won’t be in the playoffs, either.

Officially, sportsclubstats.com lists the Flyers as having an 0.7 percent chance to qualify for the postseason.

After a strong start, the Flyers faded quickly en route to their third straight loss, 2-1, while Boston defeated Ottawa, 3-1, to open up a nine-point gap on the Flyers in the wild-card standings.

Sure, the playoff race is over but we thought you'd like to know the math, anyway.

Vernon Fiddler broke a 1-1 tie at 13:50 of the third to win it for Dallas.

Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen came into play with a lifetime record of 0-10-3 against the Flyers.

First time
Brayden Schenn’s goal early in the first period represented the first time in five games the Flyers scored first.

Vs. the West
The Flyers came into the game with an 11-6-4 record against the Western Conference.

Chances
The Flyers had some good ones. Claude Giroux set up Jakub Voracek late in the second period but Lehtonen made a fine upper-body stop on his shot. Voracek then hesitated on an odd-man rush instead of charging the net and firing. His second guess saw him fire it right into Lehtonen’s belly.

Notable goals
Fiddler broke a 1-1 tie late in the third period off a perfect crossing pass at the net from Colton Sceviour.

Goalie report
Lehtonen always struggles against the Flyers no matter what NHL jersey he is wearing, but he had some strong saves in this one.

Power play
The Flyers were 0 for 3 and didn’t look very impressive at all. They are 1 for 15 over the six games. Dallas was also 0 for 3.

Penalty kill
The Flyers' PK units were not overworked by any means.

Shots
The Flyers led 14-9 after one period; Dallas had 16 shots in the second period and pulled away in the third period with puck possession. The Stars outshot the Flyers, 39-26.

Injuries
Nicklas Grossmann, back in the lineup after missing four games with a concussion, was hit in the face early, missed shifts, but returned to play.

Scratches
Defenseman Michael Del Zotto (right foot); forward R.J. Umberger (healthy).

Up next
The Flyers practice Wednesday at Skate Zone, then head to St. Louis to meet Ken Hitchcock’s Blues on Thursday and attempt a season-series sweep.
