Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Cam York had gone over eight months without playing a game.

The extended time between Michigan's hockey seasons offered the lithe defenseman a greater opportunity to build up his strength in preparation for his anticipated sophomore season with the Wolverines.

A stronger York is a scarier York.

Arguably a top-three prospect in the Flyers' system, the 2019 first-round pick showed over the weekend that he was chomping at the bit for the 2020-21 season. It's a big year for York. Time will tell how the college hockey season transpires amid the challenges of COVID-19, but 2020-21 could be York's last hurrah in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as his transition to pro hockey doesn't seem far down the road.

In the 12th-ranked Wolverines' two-game sweep of Arizona State, York recorded a goal, two assists, 11 shots, three blocked shots and a plus-3 rating. All his points came in the season-opening 8-1 rout of the Sun Devils.

His elusiveness and skill were on display.

"Cam made big strides physically in the offseason and spent his time wisely," Flyers assistant general manager Brent Flahr said Tuesday to NBC Sports Philadelphia. "He and his Michigan teammates got off to a very good start against Arizona State over the weekend with a couple impressive victories. Cam played big minutes, he retrieved and moved pucks efficiently, he was strong defensively, he was solid on the PK and he was engaged offensively in both games. They have an exciting group of young players on the team and Cam should be a leader and an integral part of the team there. It should be great experience for him."

York is a dynamic power play quarterback who will eat up minutes in an extensive role for Michigan. Next up for the Wolverines is Wisconsin on Thursday and Friday night. Some of Michigan's games are televised on the Big Ten Network. When they are, they're worth checking in on for Flyers fans because York is that noticeable and that fun to watch.
