Flyers announce winners of their 2021-22 team awards

Prior to the season finale of the Flyers' 2021-22 season, the organization's second straight underachieving year, the club announced the winners of its team awards:

Here's who took home honors:

Cam Atkinson — Bobby Clarke Trophy (Flyers MVP — selected by sportswriters and sportscasters)

If not for a lower-body injury suffered April 12, Atkinson very likely would have finished as the Flyers' leading point man and goal scorer. When the 32-year-old winger went down, he was first on the club in points (50) and goals (23).

In Year 1 with the Flyers, Atkinson had played all 73 games and most of the season banged up before the final injury.

Prior to Atkinson earning the award, Sean Couturier won it for three straight seasons, becoming the first Flyer to do so since Eric Lindros (1993-96).

Travis Sanheim — Barry Ashbee Trophy (Most outstanding defenseman — selected by sportswriters and sportscasters)

Despite a season in which the team took a serious step backward, Sanheim took big strides forward.

Entering the season finale, the 26-year-old led the Flyers' defensemen in points (31 — all at even strength) and assists (24) while putting up a team-best plus-11 on-ice even strength goal differential. That's pretty impressive considering the Flyers came into the finale with a minus-85 goal differential.

Cam Atkinson — Yanick Dupre Class Guy Award (Presented to the Flyer who best illustrates character, dignity and respect both on and off the ice — selected by Philadelphia chapter of PHWA)

Atkinson was an accountable guy all season and a real pro on and off the ice. He bonded with the fan base from Day 1 and has been one of the team's leaders.

Travis Sanheim — Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy (Most improved — selected by teammates)

This is the second season in which Sanheim has won the most improved award. He also took home the honor in 2018-19.

He finished with a minus-22 rating last season. This season, he led the team in that category and set a career high in minutes per game. He definitely did his part this season.

Zack MacEwen — Gene Hart Memorial Award (Player with the most “heart” — selected by Philadelphia Flyers Fan Club)

MacEwen quickly became a well-liked guy in Philly for his hard-nose style and propensity to drop the gloves.

The 25-year-old winger works hard and his fights are no cheapies. They've been impressive bouts and he plays to the crowd, too.
