Twarynski gives back to Mason Hicks, who gives the Flyers' winger ‘extra motivation'

Carsen Twarynski's path to the NHL has been paved by hard work and determination.

His game is a textbook on those qualities.

"I've got to work hard," Twarynski said in September 2019. "That's what I've done my whole life. ... I've been through a lot of adversity through my hockey career."

Twarynski, who turns 23 years old this month, has found another source of motivation this offseason: perspective on pushing forward from 14-year-old Mason Hicks, a burn victim from an accidental house fire when he was 2 years old.

Hicks is a huge Flyers fan and met members of the team back in 2015. He recently connected with Twarynski, who worked his way onto the Flyers' season-opening roster last year and played 15 games for the club.

"It takes a lot of work to get there and it takes even more work to stay up," Twarynski said in July.

Twarynski said Hicks is doing great. The winger was able to present Hicks with autographed hockey sticks from himself, Kevin Hayes and Ivan Provorov.

"A close family friend who owns a small restaurant/pub in Haddonfield, New Jersey, it happens to be the same place that Mason and his father go to," Twarynski said Tuesday to Flyers senior director of communications Zack Hill. "Fortunately, I was able to meet Mason and honestly, being able to meet him was great for me. He's been through a lot and being able to hear his story and how he carries himself, still living his life to the fullest, gives me extra motivation that I didn't already have. And he is still a hard-core Flyers fan."
