Two lesser-known forwards giving Flyers needed depth contributions

After a fifth straight loss — and third straight in gut-wrenching fashion — the Flyers (15-25-10) are right back at it Tuesday when they host the Blues (29-14-6).

Let's get into the essentials for the game:

  • When: 7 p.m. ET with The Warm Up at 6 p.m. ET and Flyers Pregame Live at 6:15 p.m. ET
  • Where: Wells Fargo Center
  • Broadcast: NBC Sports Philadelphia
  • Live stream: NBCSportsPhiladelphia.com and the NBC Sports MyTeams app

• In their 4-3 overtime loss Monday to the Hurricanes, the Flyers got quality depth work, particularly from Gerry Mayhew and Patrick Brown.

Mayhew had a goal and five shots in 15:45 minutes. He has climbed the lineup recently during games.

Since Jan. 20, the 29-year-old winger leads the Flyers in goals with six. He has three goals in the last two games after entering the season with two career NHL goals.

"This is the opportunity of a lifetime for him so I don’t want to take that away by letting him feel comfortable right now, but at the same time, I am really happy for him because of his work ethic, because of seeing what he’s been through his whole career to get here," Flyers interim head coach Mike Yeo said last Thursday. "He’s proving it and he’s doing it, so I hope that he can continue doing it because it’s a great story."

In the loss to Carolina, Brown played his first game since Jan. 8 after recovering from an MCL sprain.

The 29-year-old center provides a lot of key bottom-six traits. Against the Hurricanes, Brown scored a goal, had five shots, four hits and won 10 of 14 faceoffs in 14:34 minutes.

"With Browny at center, this is a guy with that doesn't bring a lot of points, but we've really missed him," Yeo said Monday. "Especially with a guy like [Sean Couturier] out and with [Kevin Hayes] out, Browny is a guy that can take faceoffs for us, can kill penalties and understands the little things that are required to win hockey games. I thought even though he has been out for a long time, he added a lot to our group tonight."

• Carter Hart missed Monday's game because of an eye infection.

Yeo said before the game that the Flyers were hopeful the 23-year-old goalie would be available Tuesday night against the Blues but he was "not 100 percent sure."

Yeo will hold his Tuesday pregame media availability at 4:30 p.m. ET, so we'll know more then on the Flyers' goaltending situation tonight.

Update: Hart out for second straight game
