NEWARK, N.J. -- When it rains, it pours.

With the Flyers trailing to the hapless Devils, 3-2, early in the third period Thursday at the Prudential Center, goalie Steve Mason injured himself trying to stop a breakaway goal by forward Taylor Hall.

After the game -- an eventual 6-2 defeat -- Mason was diagnosed with cramps. He'll be further evaluated on Friday.

Mason went to a full split but was unsuccessful in the save attempt on Hall. He stayed down on the ice face-first before eventually rising to one knee once attended to by a team trainer.

After a few minutes of evaluation, Mason was taken out for backup Michal Neuvirth. Mason skated off the ice with the staff member by his side.

The impending unrestricted free agent has started eight of the last nine games.

The Flyers don't play again until Sunday.

"Hopefully he's back for us because he's been playing good," Brayden Schenn said.

Hall went in on Mason untouched and beat him with a bevy of moves. The free look was a result of a loose puck squirting past defensemen Nick Schultz and Shayne Gostisbehere along the side boards.

"That fourth goal, it's one we can't give up," Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. "I won't get into the particulars on it, but that put us in a pretty deep hole."

Mason allowed four goals on 23 shots in 41:29 ice time. He's had no luck against New Jersey in his career, the only team he hasn't beaten. Coming in, Mason was 0-8-0 with a 3.77 goals-against average and .854 save percentage in 10 lifetime matchups with the Devils.
