A big honor for Union head coach Jim Curtin

Union head coach Jim Curtin had steadily improved his team since taking the job back in 2014. This season, he led his team to its most successful regular season in franchise history. Major League Soccer took full notice, naming him the league’s Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year award winner.

Tuesday morning, the Union tweeted out a video of Curtin meeting with his players, as midfielder Alejandro Bedoya and defender Ray Gaddis congratulated him.

The Villanova alum, who finished third in the voting last year, led the Union to the Supporters’ Shield, given to the team with the best regular-season record in MLS. It’s the first trophy of any kind won by the franchise.

The voting system is a unique one – taking votes from the media, members of each club’s technical staff, as well as the players. Curtin finished first in each category, taking more than half of the votes from club technical staffs, and more than a third of the player vote.

The Union could take down more individual awards later this week.

Goalkeeper Andre Blake is a nominee for both Goalkeeper of the Year and league MVP, and Mark McKenzie is a finalist for Defender of the Year. Midfielder Brenden Aaronson finished a close second in the Young Player of the Year voting to LAFC’s Diego Rossi.

Curtin and the Union will host a Round One MLS Cup Playoff game a week from today. Their opponent has yet to be determined.
