Sapong's late goal helps Union draw New York City FC

NEW YORK -- C.J. Sapong scored in the 86th minute and the Union tied NYC FC 1-1 on Thursday night.

Maurice Edu headed a long cross in front of the goal and an unmarked Sapong found the back of the net.

Philadelphia (1-3-3) beat NYC FC (1-2-3) 2-1 in stoppage time five days ago for its lone victory.

Mehdi Ballouchy gave NYC FC a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute when he bent in a goal from just inside the 18-yard line.

Khiry Shelton, the second overall draft pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, made his first start for NYC FC. He beat goalkeeper John McCarthy to a loose ball in the 23rd minute but his cross across the empty net was defended away by Sheanon Williams. In the 38th minute, a through ball to Shelton pulled McCarthy out of his box again but his cross was intercepted.
