BOX SCORE

PITTSBURGH — Starling Marte rolled a single over the mound and into center field past diving infielders Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez to push the Pirates past the Phillies, 1-0, in 13 innings on Friday night.

During the defeat, reliever Ken Giles had a heated exchange in the dugout with manager Ryne Sandberg and pitching coach Bob McClure after the reliever escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning (see story).

Many innings after, Pirates pinch-hitter Chris Stewart singled with one out in the 13th, then moved to second on a groundout. Marte’s base hit scored the only run of the game for the walk-off winner.

The Phillies are now a major-league worst 7-24 on the road and 16-29 all-time against the Pirates at PNC Park, the club’s worst record at any road ballpark since 2001.

Former Phillie Antonio Bastardo was the winner after he pitched a scoreless 13th inning. Bastardo (1-0) retired the Phillies in order and struck out a batter.

Dustin McGowan was handed the loss. McGowan (1-2) allowed the game’s only run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Starting pitching report
In his first start with the Phillies, Kevin Correia pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings. He gave up five hits, walked one and struck out four.

Correia was removed in the sixth after he yielded two-out singles to Neil Walker and Josh Harrison.

Pittsburgh left-hander Jeff Locke overcame a rocky start to pitch six shutout frames. After he needed 61 pitches to get through the game’s first three innings, Locke allowed one baserunner on a walk through his next three innings.

Locke gave up six hits, walked one and struck out two.

At the plate
The Phillies picked up six hits in the game’s first three innings but were unable to score. They went hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base, while stranding men at third base in the 10th and 11th innings.

Pittsburgh advanced runners to scoring position in five innings but couldn’t capitalize. The Pirates went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left 17 men on base.

Bullpen report
Left-hander Elvis Araujo entered for Correia in the sixth and retired Pedro Alvarez to end the inning.

Luis Garcia allowed a single to Francisco Cervelli and walked Jung Ho Kang but struck out Marte out to strand runners at second and third in the seventh.

Giles struck out Jordy Mercer swinging with the bases loaded to end the eighth.

Jeanmar Gomez struck out Corey Hart with the bases loaded to end the 10th.

Minors matter
Phillies prospect centerfielder Roman Quinn left Double A Reading's game Friday night in the bottom of the second inning with an apparent upper leg injury, according to reporters at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Fightin Phils released no official word on the injury in which Quinn suffered while running out a single. The 22-year-old is hitting .306 on the season and leads the Eastern League in runs scored (44) and stolen bases (29).

Up next
The Phillies continue their series in Pittsburgh as Sean O’Sullivan (1-4, 4.96 ERA) toes the rubber against Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole (9-2, 1.73), who sports the most wins and lowest ERA in the National League.
