Phillies place 4 players on COVID IL, including Aaron Nola

The Phillies placed four players on the COVID-related injured list Sunday morning, 2½ hours before their final game of the first half.

Aaron Nola, Alec Bohm, Bailey Falter and Connor Brogdon all went on the COVID IL.

Nola was supposed to start Sunday’s game in Boston. Brandon Kintzler started instead in a bullpen game.

Bohm tested positive and will miss a minimum of 10 days, according to manager Joe Girardi. The others were placed in protocols because of contact tracing. Bohm played seven innings Saturday and had three at-bats before exiting in the eighth inning.

Loosened COVID protocols are in place for MLB teams that reach the 85 percent vaccination threshold for players and on-field personnel. So far, 23 teams have reached that threshold but the Phillies are not one of them.

"It is what it is," Girardi said after the Phillies improbably won a tense game, 5-4. "It’s not like we’re surprised that something can happen. We always try to stay prepared, the guys do the best they can to protect themselves. There are some strands that are extremely contagious.

"We had a plan today, it’s not like this was sprung on us at 9 a.m. We pretty much knew yesterday after the game that this was the likely scenario, so you’ve got to deal with it."

Left-handed pitchers Damon Jones and Cristopher Sanchez, right-hander Mauricio Llovera and infielder Nick Maton were recalled from Triple A.

Sanchez pitched three innings and was as instrumental as any Phillie in the final win before the break.
