There's a new betting favorite to win the NL East

Thanks to their eight-game winning streak, the Phillies have not only catapulted to the top of the NL East standings but they are now the favorite to win the NL East, per NBC Sports betting partner PointsBet.

Right now they are the odds-on favorite at -120 ($12 bet to win $10) to capture their first division crown since 2011. In early June, their number was at +1200 ($10 bet to win $120).

What a difference a week makes as the Phils were listed at +500 before their recent string of success. After sweeping the Nationals, the Phils’ odds dropped to +200 while the Mets were even money. Then the Phillies swept the Mets out of Citizens Bank Park this past weekend, which now has the Braves listed at +250 and Mets at +300 to clinch the NL East.

Bryce Harper and Zack Wheeler are big reasons for the Phillies' success. Harper is hitting .367 with four HRs and seven RBIs in the month of August and is now listed with the second-best odds to win NL MVP honors at +400 ($10 to win $40), trailing only the Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. (-110).

Harper’s odds have plummeted dating back to July 27 ... check out these numbers:

  • +10000 — July 27
  • +5000 — Aug. 2
  • +3000 — Aug. 4
  • +1500 — Aug. 5
  • +700 — Aug. 6
  • +500 — Aug. 7
  • +400 — Current listing

Meanwhile, Wheeler is 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA during the Phils' eight-game win streak. Before the streak, he was listed with odds of +1400 ($10 bet to win $140). That number dropped to +450 and eventually to his current odds of +190 ($10 bet to win 19), instilling him as the favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award. Wheeler entered the season at +4000, which was his highest number all season long.

So needless to say the Phillies have caught the eyes of the oddsmakers with their recent success over the Pirates, Nationals and Mets. Now we will see if they can keep the momentum rolling against two teams with 60-plus wins in the Dodgers and Reds.
