Phillies Notes: Adams mending; Zambrano hurt

LOS ANGELES – Phillies reliever Mike Adams, out for the season with three tears in his shoulder, explained his reason for choosing to rehab the shoulder rather than have surgery:

“This give me two shots to make it back,” he said. “If I have the surgery and it doesn’t fix the problem, I’m done. This might be the best chance for me right now.”

Adams has a double tear in his labrum and a tear in his rotator cuff. During rehab he will try to build strength in the muscles around the shoulder to try to take pressure off the injured areas. If that doesn’t work, he said, surgery would be a last resort.

“If all goes well I’ll be ready for spring training,” he said.

Adams is in the first year of a two-year, $12 million contract. He is guaranteed $7 million next season.

Zambrano injures shoulder
Carlos Zambrano won’t be joining the Phillies next week. He left his start at Lehigh Valley after two innings with a shoulder injury Friday night. There weren’t a lot of details, but GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had been told that Zambrano was in “serious pain.”

Zambrano can opt out of his minor-league contract if he isn’t brought to the majors by Monday. That will not happen. It’s unclear what Zambrano’s future holds.

McDonald joins Phils
Utility infielder John McDonald, acquired in a trade with Cleveland on Thursday, joined the team before Friday night’s game.
