WASHINGTONThe Phillies sent rookie pitcher Vance Worley to Triple A after Mondays win over Washington.

The club will fill his roster spot before Tuesday nights game. Assistant general manager Scott Proefrock would not comment on the teams plans.

Worley, 23, was coming off two difficult starts in which he allowed 18 hits and eight earned runs in eight innings. He allowed 12 hits in three innings against the Mets on Sunday.

Worley pitched well for the Phils in two starts after first coming up from the minors in late April. He allowed just six hits and one run over 12 innings in those starts. Worley spent the next three weeks working in relief. He also made an abbreviated start at Triple A. The sporadic work may be the reason he has struggled in his last two outings.

We want him to go down and get back to where he was when he was throwing the ball real good, manager Charlie Manuel said. We want him to get stretched out.

Worley took the news in stride. He admitted that he was not where he needed to be physically.

I need to go down and get some more innings, he said. Im fine with it. I know what I need to work on and Ill be back in a couple of starts. I need to get my pitch count up and get deeper into games. I also need to work on a secondary pitch other than a changeup.

They told me theyd see me shortly, that I was part of this team.

Worley was scheduled to pitch Saturday in Pittsburgh. The Phils could plug that start from within with Kyle Kendrick. Its also possible that they completely skip a fifth starter until June 8. An off day Thursday would allow them to do that if they choose.
