Talk about a pressure putt.
Drexel senior Chris Crawford qualified for next week's U.S. Open by sinking a long 40-foot putt at the sectional qualifier at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, New Jersey, on Monday. The Bensalem, Pennsylvania, native is the first golfer in Drexel history to qualify for the U.S. Open.
Crawford shot a six-under over 36 holes, good enough for a third-place tie out of 98 golfers. The top six qualified for the U.S. Open in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
Crawford entered the 16th hole tied for first, but after bogeying 16 and 17, he fell a stroke below the cut. Crawford then ran into trouble on the 18th. After finding the 13th fairway with his second shot, the standout senior skied one over a line of trees to put the ball on the green, 40 feet from the pin. And the rest is history. Breaking right to left, Crawford sank the putt for the third-place tie.
The U.S. Open will be held at Oakmont Country Club, right outside of Pittsburgh and takes place June 16-19.
