Happening Elsewhere: Chris Young to the Mets

Make it two injury-prone starters added to an already frailty-succeptible New York Mets pitching rotation this off-season. After signing righty Chris Capuano to a one-year deal a couple weeks ago, the Mets came to terms on Thursday on a 4.5 mil / one year deal with ex-Padres lefty Chris Young. Formerly the #2 starter in San Diego behind ace Jake Peavy, Young had missed large chunks of the '08 and '09 seasons and almost the entirety of 2010 with shoulder injuries. When healthy, though, the 6'10" hurler was an All-Star in 2007, going 9-8 with a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts.

Young signed an incentive-laden contract with the Mets, essentially meant to reward for Young for staying healthy enough to make a sizable number of starts. ""I'm really excited about the way I feel right now," said Young. "I feel healthy. Ifeel strong. I'm hopeful that it will hold up." The Metropolitans certainly hope so. "We're very pleased to have Chris. No doubt about it," said GM Sandy Alderson, who knows Young from his days at the Padres' helm. "We really believe Chris can make a major contribution to us."

The projected season-opening rotation for the Mets now consists of Young, R.A. Dickey, Mike Pelfrey, Jonathon Niese and the previously-mentioned Capuano. Not exactly a lineup to strike fear into the hearts of the NL East--especially compared to the tossers thrown out by the Phils these days--but at the least, a competent-enough bunch capable of holding the fort until nominal ace Johan Santana can return from a shoulder injury of his own.
