Derrick Gunn: Being locked up at home isn't so bad after all

Share

Under my roof lives four adults, three constantly barking dogs, and a 16 month old demolition expert (my grandson). Needless to say, there is never a dull moment while three of us are working from home.

You would think that finding your own personal space to think and getting work done would be a challenge, but it's not. We have perfected the art of communicating who needs what area at what times, and when to put the dogs away to get some quiet time in the house.

I thought being held captive in my domain away from the daily rigors of driving to work, covering Eagles practice, and working on our show Quick Slants would drive me nuts. But its been quite the opposite. It actually has been quite refreshing. I love getting up in the morning, chatting with the family as we begin our daily activities and watching my grandson develop his personality.  He constantly keeps us laughing.

There is a lot of laughter in our house but then again there always has been. That’s one of many things I’ve always been been blessed with is joy in the home. I know we’re supposed to stay home and all that, but several times a week I get out to run errands to grocery or hardware stores.

I’m cautious. I started wearing a mask and I’m constantly washing my hands and using hand wipes. I do my best to keep my distance from others even when they want to talk about sports. Its a strange new world we temporarily live in. Face masks, gloves, limited numbers of people allowed in stores at one time. Department stores, and movie theaters gone dark . I never thought in my lifetime I’d be forced to function in an environment that through the years we’ve seen many times in movies about quarantines and contaminations.

In my house we love to cook, bake, and grill out which we still do a lot of, but we also do our part in giving local restaurants business to help keep them going. Soon we will get back to normal but it will be a new normal. I look forward to it, but will also miss the extended opportunity I’m afforded right now of being home. Taking walks around my neighborhood with the dogs or my grandson and family members has been relaxing.

Oh well. Time to go check off another task on my honey do list around the house. As I leave you, I do so with the new norm of greetings, “Stay well, and be safe."
