Brandon Spikes, ILB
Age: 27
Height: 6-3
Weight: 250
Last team: Buffalo Bills

Scouting report
The former University of Florida star spent his first four seasons with New England, which drafted him 62nd overall in 2010, but wasn’t re-signed and joined the Bills on a one-year deal. He’s not an ideal fit for Buffalo’s new defensive scheme and it appears Spikes will be on his third team in three years. Spikes, primarily a run-stopping LB, has two career picks and two sacks along with five forced fumbles. He made $3.25 million last year, according to spotrac.com.

Geoff’s take
There’s only one reason to sign this guy — if the Eagles plan to release DeMeco Ryans. If they’re getting rid of Ryans to save salary, they’ll need a thumper at linebacker opposite Mychal Kendricks. Spikes is a thumper, and that’s about it. He’s a two-down linebacker, which the Eagles would need if they cut ties with Ryans. If Ryans stays, I wouldn’t view Spikes as a wise signing.

Roob’s take
I have a hunch Ryans is going to be OK by the time opening day rolls around, and Kelly genuinely seems to want him back, so as long as his rehab is on target, there’s really no reason to bring in Spikes. He’s going to want significant money, and his skill set is limited. I do think the Eagles need some depth at inside backer, but it has to be cheaper depth. Now, if the Eagles have reason to believe Ryans won’t be able to return and play at a high level this year after a second Achilles injury, they’d have to find a starter, and Spikes could be a good fit. But I don’t see it happening.
