Week 5 NFC power rankings: Eagles take a big slide

Share

After four weeks of the 2018 season, the Eagles are sitting with a disappointing 2-2 record.

There’s just one undefeated team in the NFC and one winless team.

Here’s a complete power ranking for the NFC as we head into Week 5:

1. Rams (4-0) Last week: 1
Jared Goff and his squad won a super exciting shootout against the Vikings on Thursday Night Football. They’re the most complete team in the NFL right now. That offense is humming and that high-priced defensive line is starting to come alive.

2. Saints (3-1) Last week: 3
We have a new No. 2 team in the NFC. The impressive thing about their win over the Giants is that Drew Brees didn’t even have a monster game. Alvin Kamara looks like the real deal: 134 yards and three touchdowns. This offense can score a lot of different ways.

3. Panthers (2-1) Last week: 4
Carolina didn’t play this week but gets a bump after the Eagles fell out of their spot. The Panthers are home this week against the Giants and have a great chance to move to 3-1.

4. Bears (3-1) Last week: 9
Last week, I said the reason I wasn’t buying into the Bears yet was that I had questions about Mitchell Trubisky. Well, the youngster threw for six touchdowns against the Bucs. Great game from him that gives the Bears the biggest jump of the week. On their bye week, the Bears will have an extra week to prepare for a big matchup against the Dolphins next week.

5. Packers (2-1-1) Last week: 6
No, the Bills aren’t a good team, but they were coming off a huge win at Minnesota. And the Packers took them down easily, 22-0. Aaron Rodgers didn’t even have a great game. Dominant performance from the defense.

6. Eagles (2-2) Last week: 2
Our slide of the week. Maybe this is unfair because the Eagles were up 17-3 over the Titans before they blew it. But good teams win that game and right now, the Eagles are 2-2 for a reason. The only reason they were still No. 2 last week was that we expected the addition of Wentz meant the real season was about to begin. But that was a bad loss Sunday. The defense blew the game and the offense still hasn’t scored over 23 points all year. That’s not going to get it done.

7. Vikings (1-2-1) Last week: 7
Sure, the Vikings lost last week to the Rams, but the Rams are the best team in football and the Vikings had a good game after that clunker they played the week before against the Bills. The Vikings are better than their record suggests, which makes this NFC Championship Game rematch really exciting Sunday.

8. Buccaneers (2-2) Last week: 5
The magic is gone. More specifically, the Fitzmagic is gone. The Bucs got spanked by the Bears, 48-10. Jameis Winston is the starting quarterback again going forward. We’ll see if he can provide a new spark. They have a bye next week to regroup.

9. Falcons (1-3) Last week: 8
Atlanta has to start winning some of these close games. They lost by six to the Eagles in the opener, in overtime to the Saints and by one point to the Bengals on Sunday.

10. Redskins (2-1) Last week: 10
On a bye week, Washington watched the Eagles blow their lead. It now owns the top spot in the NFC East. It’s hard to imagine the season ending like that.

11. Cowboys (2-2) Last week: 13
A big game from Zeke Elliott helped the Cowboys win a close game over the Lions, 26-24, down there in the spaceship. He didn’t set the world on fire, but it was also an efficient game from Dak Prescott. The Cowboys are tied with the Eagles for the second spot in the division.

12. Seahawks (2-2) Last week: 12
Seattle had a hard-fought win over the worst team in the NFL and lost its best defensive player in the process.

13. Lions (1-3) Last week: 11
A new coach and the same story for the Lions. I thought they’d get a little momentum after the win over the Patriots, but when they had a chance to take down the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, they couldn’t get it done. Tough matchup against the Packers this week.

14. Giants (1-3) Last week: 14
The Giants’ defense couldn’t stop the Saints when Brees didn’t have a big game. The Giants are in danger of dropping to 1-4 next week on the road at Carolina as the Panthers come off a bye.

15. 49ers (1-3) Last week: 15
That was a tough loss to the Chargers on the road. C.J. Beathard actually played better than anyone probably expected. But without Jimmy Garappolo, stick a fork in ‘em.

16. Cardinals (0-4) Last week: 16
The only winless team in the NFL. But … a big matchup against the 49ers next week. They have a chance to get a W next week.
