Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger will undergo surgery to remove a herniated disc from his spinal cord on Thursday.

Pronger, who missed the last three games of the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Boston Bruins, is scheduled to have a procedure called a discectomy, which will be performed by orthopedic specialist Frank Cammisa at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

The Flyers' 36-year-old defenseman was reported to have been experiencing pain in his back and leg, and he saw specialists earlier this week to determine their origin.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Mike Richards, Anrdrej Meszaros and Blair Betts all underwent successful surgeries, and Michael Leighton went into surgery Wednesday afternoon.

Richards and Meszaros both underwent surgical repairs to their wrists. Meszaros had a torn ligament and torn cartilage in his right wrist. Richards had a torn ligament in his left wrist and is scheduled to begin rehab in four weeks.

Repairs were made to Betts' left pinkie finger, and the Flyers' fourth-liner is scheduled to begin rehab in a month. Leighton's surgery is to repair a torn labrum in his hip. It is the second labrum repair the goaltender has had in the past year.
