Box score

ANAHEIM — Ryan Kesler, who may be long in the tooth, still has plenty of goals in his stick as he scored a hat trick on New Year’s Day.

But it was Corey Perry who gave the Ducks a 4-3 shootout victory at Honda Center as the Flyers closed out their three-game western road trip losing all three games.

The Flyers failed to take advantage of a four-minute power play in the third period. They also had a season-high 55 shots.

They overcome an early 3-1 second period deficit.

Despite a bruised left hand suffered Friday in San Jose, Steve Mason returned in goal for the Flyers

Matt Read returned off LTIR after missing 11 games while defenseman  Radko Gudas (stiff back) returned after a one-game absence.

The Flyers came into the game having lost 10 consecutive games in road trips that began after the Christmas break over the past three seasons.

Season series
Anaheim was looking to sweep after a 3-2 win in Philly back in October.

Hat trick
Kesler’s first since 2011 and fourth of his career. He scored his hat trick on four shots.

Notable goals
Travis Konecny returned to the lineup after a one-game benching and scored off his own rebound to make it a 1-1 game in the first period. He had gone 22 games without a goal.

Goalie report
Strange that coach Dave Hakstol would start Steve Mason after he bruised his hand in Friday’s game at San Jose instead of going to fully healthy Anthony Stolarz. Mason let in a very weak goal that was Kesler’s third in the game, but he also had a critical pad stop on Andrew Cogliano’s breakaway near the end of the second period. Ducks goalie John Gibson had a career-high 51 saves.

Power play
Konecny got hit with an embellishment call in the first period that cost the Flyers a late power play and brief two-man advantage, too. Yet he was hit from behind into the wall? Brayden Schenn tied it at 3-3. They had five shots during the four-minute power play.

Penalty kill
One of Anaheim’s goals came right after a Ducks' power play expired because the Flyers could not clear the zone. The Flyers killed off both Ducks' power plays.

Fights
Wayne Simmonds and Kevin Bieksa fought to a first period draw.

Scratches
Defenseman Nick Schultz (healthy) and Mark Streit (left shoulder); forwards Boyd Gordon (healthy), Nick Cousins (healthy); goalie Michal Neuvirth (left knee).

Up next
The Flyers return home after the game and are off on Monday. They resume practice Tuesday at Skate Zone and will host the New York Rangers on Wednesday.
