BOX SCORE

They went into the weekend six points out of the wild card and then lost more ground to Toronto, which moved the Flyers seven points out of the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot with a win Saturday night.

By weekend's end, the Flyers were five points out after Sunday night's pulsating 4-3 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes at the Wells Fargo Center. Brayden Schenn scored the game-winner.

Jordan Staal's power-play goal broke a 2-2 tie in the third period but Travis Konecny forced OT with a late goal just after a power play expired.

This was Carolina's fifth game in seven days and the 'Canes looked tired at the outset, as the Flyers built a 2-0 lead only to see Carolina come storming back.

Shots
The Flyers had a 15-4 shot advantage in the first period but none of them truly stood out. Not much going on.

Big steal
Sean Couturier's forced turnover on Staal set up Ivan Provorov's goal in the first period for a 1-0 Flyer lead. Couturier had three assists on the night.

Notable goals
Jeff Skinner scored his 13th in 25 games against the Flyers for Carolina's first goal of the night.

Goalie report
Steve Mason did not have a lot of work in this game. Probably not much he could do on Elias Lindholm's one-timer that made it, 2-2. Cam Ward was bombarded.

Power play
The Flyers had a 5-on-3 for 38 seconds in the third period and couldn't get a good shot on Cam Ward. They were 0 for 3 with two shots.

Penalty kill
Matt Read called for goalie interference? Doesn't get close enough to the net most games for that to happen. The Flyers had three clears on the 'Canes second period power play. But they gave up a killer goal to Staal. That's eight goals against on their last 22 kills.

Scratches
Forwards Michael Raffl (left knee), Nick Cousins (upper body) and Roman Lyubimov (healthy); defenseman Brandon Manning (right shoulder).

Up next
The Flyers will have team photo day Monday at the Wells Fargo Center and practice there before heading to Winnipeg to begin their last long road trip of the season -- four games.
