TORONTO – Infielder Freddy Galvis, who has struggled at the plate, was optioned to Triple A Lehigh Valley after Thursday’s 12-6 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays (see Instant Replay).

A corresponding move will be announced Friday before the Phillies open a series in New York against the Mets.

Galvis was 0 for 3 with a walk on Thursday and is 2 for 42 on the season for a batting average of .048. He has two walks and one RBI.

Galvis was hampered at spring training with a knee infection due to MRSA and he began the season on the disabled list. He was activated on April 11.

“He needs to go and play and get at-bats and just gather himself a little bit,” manager Ryne Sandberg said after the game at Rogers Centre. “He might have been rushed up here a little bit with not having spring training.”
