Stanton out of Marlins' lineup; Young making progress

MIAMI — A couple of quick notes before the Phillies play the Miami Marlins on Friday night …

Before batting practice, Phils' manager Charlie Manuel said of Marlins' slugger Giancarlo Stanton: "He's the guy in that lineup that we don't want to beat us."

Stanton, who had 37 home runs and 86 RBIs last season, won't beat the Phillies on Friday night. He was a late scratch from the lineup because of a sore shoulder. Austin Kearns was added to the Marlins' lineup in right field.

Speaking of rightfielders, Delmon Young continues to make progress in his recovery from offseason ankle surgery. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. peeked in on Young in an extended spring-training game in Clearwater on Thursday. Young played another game on Friday.

Amaro said Young's running was improving and the outfielder would likely start an official 20-day minor-league rehab assignment some time next week. Amaro would not put a timetable on Young's being ready to join the big club, but previous estimates have targeted late April to May 1.

Amaro said Young was swinging the bat well. Defense remains the concern with Young. Phillies official will watch his defense closely during his minor-league rehab stint. The plan is for him to become the team's rightfielder when he's ready to be activated.

"He'll be a great addition to our offense, but he won't come until he can play right field," Amaro said.
