Delonte West is making encouraging progress

We could all use something encouraging right now. So many Americans are divided in their philosophies about how the country should be run, maybe we are all overlooking the simple things we should appreciate and be thankful for.

Some recent news about Delonte West is the perfect barometer to show how quickly life can change for any of us, good or bad.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban picked up the former St. Joseph’s University star — at the behest of West’s mom — from a Dallas gas station last month, where he was holding a sign asking for handouts. Cuban helped the 37-year-old enter a detox program and drug treatment facility.

West was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008.

Along with the frisbee and kayaking, the eight-year NBA veteran is also back enjoying one of his first loves.

Just briefly seeing that lefty stroke brings back a lot of unforgettable memories from Hawk Hill. Specifically, West’s 30-2, Elite Eight Saint Joe’s team.

Reading Cuban’s tweet about West’s progress and seeing the photos of him trying to regain some normalcy and overcome his vice was very moving for me.

We all go through obstacles and experience life’s peaks and valleys. Not always to the extent West has, but life can be raw and unforgiving at times.

Needing help and getting it at one of your lowest moments is a human element I can overwhelmingly relate to, because we all want to be loved, particularly when we may feel like we don’t deserve it.

Let’s hope West continues to take strong strides on the road to recovery; it’s not always a straight line. With the love and support of Cuban, and most importantly West’s family, he has a great chance to regain some firm footing in life.
