Embiid makes All-NBA Second Team, is eligible for supermax extension

Sixers superstar Joel Embiid on Tuesday night was named to the All-NBA Second Team for the third time.

The selection means Embiid, who is under contract through the 2022-23 season, is eligible for a four-year “supermax” extension.

Supermax extensions begin at 35 percent of the salary cap. ESPN's Bobby Marks broke down the year-by-year salaries of a potential Embiid supermax:

Embiid received 28 first-team votes and 70 second-team votes. Below are the full results:

In December, Embiid told ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan that missing out on an All-NBA selection last season motivated him, though he didn’t agree with the voting.

“I agree that Anthony Davis had a better season than me,” Embiid told MacMullan. “[Nikola] Jokic? That’s debatable. But Rudy Gobert? No offense, but he [averaged] 15 [points] and 13 [rebounds] and I had my 23 and 12, and that’s kind of a big difference. I think my numbers were better. But people didn’t want to vote for me because our team didn’t do well.

“That’s OK, because I will use it to motivate me so there is no chance that anyone can make that mistake again.”

Embiid has become the face of the Sixers franchise and the team’s best player since Allen Iverson. Injury concerns have followed him throughout his career, with the latest being the small lateral meniscus tear that he’s playing through in the postseason. However, he’s proven himself to be an immensely talented and valuable player on both sides of the ball.

Since being drafted by the Sixers in 2014, Embiid has become an involved, generous member of the Philadelphia community and spoken many times about his love for the city and its fans. The 27-year-old has made it clear he envisions many more years as a Sixer.

“Playing in Philly, I have a lot of pride, and I play for the fans and I play for the city,” he said in February. “All my goals when it comes to basketball are related to the city of Philadelphia."

Ben Simmons, the No. 2 Defensive Player of the Year finisher, was not selected to an All-NBA Team after being named to the Third Team last year. He only received one third-team vote at guard and one third-team vote at forward.
