After a long weather delay, three Trace McSorley interceptions and a first half in which Saquon Barkley rushed for zero yards, Penn State still had a chance to beat Big 10 foe Michigan State in East Lansing.
However, with the score locked at 24-24, quarterback Brian Lewerke and the Spartans put together a 62-yard drive to set up a game-winning field goal with four seconds left and all but end Penn State's College Football Playoff hopes. The Nittany Lions' (7-2) 27-24 loss dropped them nine spots to No. 16 in the latest AP poll after spending the entire season in the top 10.
Elsewhere in the Big 10, then-No. 6 Ohio State (7-2) got blown out at Iowa and tumbled to No. 11 in the poll. Unbeaten Wisconsin (9-0) dropped two spots to No. 6 despite a 45-17 drubbing of Indiana and is now the only Big 10 team in the top 10.
Alabama (9-0) and Georgia (9-0) remained No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the AP Top 25, while Notre Dame (8-1), Clemson (8-1) and Oklahoma (8-1) moved up to Nos. 3, 4 and 5, respectively, after wins Saturday.
In the College Football Playoff rankings, Georgia was ranked No. 1 last week, followed by Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson. The newest rankings come out Tuesday evening.
Penn State will look to get back on track next week at home against Rutgers.
