Flyers expected to miss key piece on defense against another undefeated team

With Ryan Ellis' injury, things have not gone as hoped or planned for the Flyers.

Head coach Alain Vigneault told reporters on Tuesday in Edmonton, Alberta that the top-pair defenseman is not expected to play Wednesday night when the Flyers take on the Oilers (10 p.m. ET/TNT).

On Monday, Ellis took part in most of practice at Flyers Training Center.

"He felt good as far as the feedback that I got coming off the ice," the Flyers' head coach said afterward. "Everything's progressing as we expected."

Vigneault said he expected Ellis to practice Tuesday and the Flyers would then make a decision on his status. However, the Philadelphia Inquirer's Olivia Reiner reported that Ellis did not practice Tuesday.

Ellis, who is dealing with an undisclosed injury and considered day to day, missed the team's 4-2 loss last Saturday to the unbeaten Panthers. The all-situation blueliner recorded 24:09 minutes per game, four points (one goal, three assists) and a plus-3 rating through the Flyers' first three games.

The Flyers went 2-1-1 on their season-opening four-game homestand. Their matchup with the 5-0-0 Oilers opens a three-game Western Canada road trip. The Flyers face the Canucks on Thursday (10 p.m. ET/NBCSP+) and the Flames on Saturday (10 p.m. ET/NBCSP+).

Here were the Flyers' defensive pairs last Saturday without Ellis:

Ivan Provorov-Justin Braun

Travis Sanheim-Rasmus Ristolainen

Keith Yandle-Nick Seeler
